Rural and island town centres face unique challenges

Can ‘thinking local’ help save Scotland’s rural and island town centres? Graham + Sibbald’s Senior Surveyor, Kenny McKenzie, thinks it might. 

 

Although it is difficult to put a definitive figure on it, the Coronavirus pandemic has had a significant effect across the Highlands and Islands. The government has tried its best to provide support, however it is clear there are challenging times ahead.

In addition, it is a hard truth that Covid-19 has only exacerbated long-term trends (mainly driven by the internet) that have changed retail in town centres across the country. As a letting agent, enquiry levels have been down, with very limited enquiries from national retails for spare in a rural or island location…
