Welcome
Fàilte

Welcome to this public exhibition event in relation to the future of Breasclete Pier, Isle of Lewis.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is currently considering the future of Breasclete Pier and is looking to engage with the local community on the future of the pier.

Breasclete Pier – Site Location

Breasclete Pier is located at Breasclete, off the A858, Isle of Lewis. The pier is located adjacent to the BASF Pharma (Callanish) Ltd facility.

Breasclete Pier – Condition

The pier consists of a concrete deck oriented approx. north / south, supported by concrete piles. The pier is 48m long x 6m wide.

The pier is accessed via land in HIE’s ownership and constructed on the seabed, leased by HIE from the Crown.

It is understood that the pier was constructed around the 1970’s.

The pier is in poor condition and is currently closed off to public access.  In 2025, HIE commissioned an Inspection Report to assess the condition of the pier and this identified a number of defects in relation to the structure of the pier.

Breasclete Pier – Future Options

Given the current condition of the pier and investment that would be required for the repair works, HIE is currently considering the future options of the pier and to determine if there is a viable future use for the pier. HIE welcome views on the future of the pier and any potential viable future uses that would require access and use of the pier.

Alternative Access Option

In January 2026, Bakkafrost obtained planning permission for works to accommodate and install an access bridge for a new pontoon facility.  In June 2026 a marine licence was granted for a new pontoon. The consented pontoon would be installed adjacent to the existing Breasclete Pier.  Bakkafrost has advised that once installed, there is the potential to allow public access to the pontoon, subject to prior agreement and no impact on operations.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

HIE want to offer the community an opportunity to tell us what you think about the future of Breasclete Pier and any ideas or options in relation to potential future uses of the pier.
