Graham + Sibbald sponsored Watsonians got off to a winning start this season. Our very own Keith Watters, Edinburgh Office Partner currently club President, serving his third term.

Watsonians 25 Heriot’s 18

The first XV defeated Heriot’s on the opening day of the new BT Premiership campaign at Myreside on Saturday to lift the 1896 Trophy.

In front of a healthy crowd, the team put in a great shift to see off last year’s top flight champions 25-18.

For the first XV hooker Sean Crombie, No.8 Rory Drummond, stand-off Ewan Scott and centre James King stood out, but all 20 players involved can be pleased with their day’s work.

In a first half that never really got going, Scott kicked two penalties for the hosts and stand-off Alex Hagart responded for Heriot’s.

Drummond was in the sin bin for a spell while Heriot’s back-row Dylan Mason was yellow carded for a high tackle just before the break.

While he was off the field Watsonians went 13-6 up in the 43rd minute thanks to a converted try by back-row Diarmaid Dee.

By this point the home pack was on top and they were awarded a penalty try 15 minutes later.

That made it 20-6 before a Steele converted try got Heriot’s within seven points.

Replacement Euan McKirdy’s try put Watsonians 25-13 up before a late score from Heriot’s ended things.

Captain King said:  “I was really pleased with the way the guys played.

“There is still plenty to work on and this is just one game, but after promotion you cannot really ask for much more than beating the champions.

“I thought the pack were outstanding and the experienced guys like Sean and Craig led from the front and put in a good shift.

“In this league you need to have a hard edge to survive and we showed that in patches in this win.”

Head coach Marcus Di Rollo said:  “I thought the guys dug in well and were not overawed by the step-up to the top flight.

“It is a good start and it was to see a good crowd at Myreside.”
