Business Rates Announcement

Scottish Councils Now Have the Power to Cut Businesses Rates Liability

John Swinney has announced that, effective from the 31 October 2015, all 32 Local Authorities will have the power to cut  rates liability and as a result they are hoping this will encourage economic activity in their area. This new legislation will allow Scottish Councils to grant this relief to every type of property and all ratepayers.

This new power, under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015  means that Scottish Councils will be able to retain all the business rates they collect.

We await to see how each Local Authorities will apply this in practice.
