G+S Student Graduates With Honours

Sponsored Student Graduates with First Class Honours

Jared Neville (21) was sponsored by Graham + Sibbald with a special bursary during his final year studying for a Building Surveying degree at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

Jared graduated with First Class Honours in July and was also recognised with a prize for his dissertation, which looked at the subject of green roof inspection.  He has now joined the Edinburgh office of Graham + Sibbald as a graduate building surveyor, working under the expert eye of partner Paul Docherty.

Jared commented: “The sponsorship was a great help as it allowed me to focus on my studies and I did not have to seek part-time jobs to supplement my income.  I am sure that it had a direct impact on my results. From a young age I was always interested in buildings and architecture and surveying seemed an obvious route.  My course at Robert Gordon involved a lengthy placement in my third year and to have secured that with Graham + Sibbald was just ideal as I learned so much during that period.  I am now looking forward to training towards my chartered status and gaining experience in the industry.”

Managing Partner Les McAndrew explained the reasons behind the G+S support.  “It is important for us to encourage new and talented young people into the industry.  By granting Jared a bursary and placement it means that he has a solid platform of practical knowledge to accompany his academic achievements.  We now have an obligation to develop and train him towards his RICS qualification and we are already exposing him to a wide range of projects in and around Edinburgh. We have taken on Graduates in other offices but this is the first time we have invested in a student whilst at University. We hope to repeat the process as it has worked well.”

Jared is originally from Cupar in Fife and is now looking for accommodation in Edinburgh.  He attended high school in Cupar and enjoys making music and playing gigs.

G+S has also employed another Robert Gordon University graduate in building surveying in its Glasgow office.  Ewan MacLachlan from Aberdeen also graduated with First Class Honours in July.
